Thrust Areas

The Centre has been undertaking research projects with financial support from  different ministries/departments and agencies of Govt. of India and Govt. of Odisha as well as different international agencies like UNDP; Ford Foundation; ILO; IDRC; IDPAD; ODI; University of Swansea; Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute; World Bank; DFID among others. It has also undertaken research projects sponsored by several national level organizations like the Planning Commission, Govt. Of India; National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER); National Institute of Rural Development(NIRD); National Commission for Women, etc. The Centre has also tried to promote independent research among faculty members by supporting to a certain limited extent by its own funds the research work that is of long term interest to the faculty.

It has also extended research and academic support to the Poverty Task Force of Govt. of Odisha under the Odisha Public Sector Reforms Programme. The Centre has been acting since 2003 as the State Monitoring Cell for the Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan(SSA) and Mid-day Meal(MDM) programmes.

Since its inception, the Centre has built up a tradition of inter-disciplinary as well as a liberal research policy wherein it was decided not to impose a unitary research agenda from above. This has encouraged research in diverse areas according to individual interests of faculty members. These may be broadly classified as follows:

Natural and Common Pool Resource Utilisation and Management (Including Forest Management Policies and Tribal Livelihood, Mineral Economy of Odisha: Missing Linkages, Brackish Water Fishery: Commercial Exploitation vs. Livelihood Base, and Economics of Irrigation and Irrigation Management Policies)

         Traditional Industries and Informal Sector

         Labour Market and Migration

         Natural Disasters and Sustainable Development

         Development projects, Displacement and Rehabilitation

Poverty Reduction Strategies and Social Sector Development in the context of Structural Adjustment Policies

Tribal Economy and Society in the Development Process

         State Finance in Development Perspective

Marginalised Sections of the Society including SC, ST and Women: Studies in Social exclusion and deprivation

         Environment, Ecology and Sustainable Development

Liberalisation, Privatisation and its Impact on the economy/society

Evaluation Studies on Anti-poverty Programmes: TLC; SSA; NCLP; Special Welfare schemes for SC/ST Population, etc.

The Centre has also played an active role in helping the State Govt. in plan formulation, assessment of policies in different areas, etc.

In a sense, there has been a culmination of individual researches in different areas in the form of two major internal collaborative projects, leading to the publication of Orissa Development Report, 2002(sponsored by the Planning Commission) and Orissa Human Development Report, 2004(sponsored by UNDP and the Planning Commission).

The Centre looks forward to making its internal research programme in the next five years (2012-17) a little more organised by way of identifying emerging areas of future research, providing opportunities to its faculty for pursuing research in line with their respective long-term interests, and externally reaching out to other ICSSR institutes for multi-centric and collaborative research, through faculty exchange and visiting fellow programmes.
